HOT! That is what describes fishing in the Brainerd Lakes Area right now. With water temperatures peaking towards our highest of the season, the fishing is following with them, 78* F is common now on our lakes, meaning BASS are very active in plastics, ned rigs, spinner baits, jig/minnow, however you would like to fish you should find some bass – get on the weed edge in 10-16 feet and you’ll find fish – Gull – North Long – Pelican are producing very well. WALLEYES are more sporadic now, under the right conditions you can still catch them on a Lindy rigs with leeches or night crawlers in 14-24 feet on WhiteFish – Gull – Round lake. The bigger PIKE are dropping deeper, 22-23 feet and can be had with Big sucker minnows or Chubs on Gull- Edward- Whitefish. SUNFISH are good in 8-14 feet on panfish leeches or wax worms – try the South End of Gull – Round – and the Cullen Chains and you should be good.

Now that we are at the mid-summer point of the season, the fish are showing up in their summer hangouts. BASS action is HOT right now, plastics, crank baits, jigs tipped with minnows are all catching- find the deeper weed lines on most lakes in the area and you’ll find bass- Hubert – Gull – and Edwards are all good bets in 8-18 feet. WALLEYES can be had with a little work on Gull -Whitefish – and Pelican in 14-24 feet – slip bobbers and leeches or night crawlers continue to put fish in the boat. PIKE are hitting on Upper Gull – Hubert – and North Long on spinner baits tipped with a sucker minnow in 12-20 ft. PANFISH are deeper now, in the right conditions you can still catch some nice sunfish in the Cullen lakes – Edna – and the South End of Gull. Happy 4th of July! The fishing in the brainerd lakes area remains excellent! With summer temps in the 80s consistently now, the water is warming and the fish are in a definite summer pattern. WALLEYES can be caught, but are a little finicky now, leeches, crawlers, and chubs are all working at times – Lindy rigs or jigs in 12-22 feet on Whitefish – Gull – and Pelican are turning fish. The BASS are hitting plastics and jig/ minnow combinations on Gull, North long, and Edwards – the deeper cabbage weeds are where they are hanging. PIKE action is solid on Upper Gull – Hubert – and Edwards, Pike suckers on a jig in 10-20 feet. PANFISH are a little more scattered but can be found on the Cullen Chain, Round, and Pelican lakes in 8-14 feet, Crappie Minnows and Panfish leeches are working best. Mid summer is upon us in the B.L.A. Despite all of the weird weather, storms, heat waves, and big rain… fishing remains very good in the BLA lately! The bobber/ leech bite in the cabbage has been very good for all species including sunfish!
Walleyes have been a little tougher lately, although in the right conditions you can still get a bunch. They have been biting on minnows, crawlers, leeches and plastics- Lindy rig, slip bobber and jigging… still nothing wildly consistent when it comes to how you are fishing-  10-25 feet has been the best – Whitefish – Gull – Pelican.
The Bass and Pike action has been excellent. Both plastics and jig/ minnow combination have been working in 8-15 feet- along the weed lines on Upper Gull, North Long, and Lake Edward.
Panfish are active on the deeper cabbage now, a small jig tipped with a wax worm or crappie minnow are working in 6-14 feet on Gull- Cullen – and Sylvan have been best.

Remember selective harvest and only keep what you need.
